Making your bed in the morning

Making your bed in the morning

"If you want to change the world, start by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Make your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. If by chance, you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made. That you made. And a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better." ~ Admiral William H. McRaven

Read that again. I think you need to hear it. This is one of a handful of speeches that rotate around in our house, usually played when one of us looks a little too comfortable sitting on our phones. What it states is not new to us. If asked we would probably all say that the little things in life matter and how we do small things is the way, we do all things. Admiral McRaven is just giving us a practical application for a simple principal. Jesus tells us this same principle in Matthew 25:21 “His master said to him, ‘Well done my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” This passage comes from the Parable of the talents in Matthew 25.

This brings us back to our title – Make your bed in the morning. McRaven told us the practical application of this beautifully. But as I said in a previous article its usually not about the action but rather the discipline. The act of making your bed takes little to no time. Technically straightening in the covers would do it. Below is the Military way to make your bed. Probably the most extreme way to do it short of building a new bed every morning. At Guardian Angels we aren’t quite as strict. We have other things to be extreme on. And that is having your bible time. That is not something that you should ever compromise on. Setting aside time for Jesus always trumps. Period. But that’s next week's lesson. What this week’s guidepost take away is this. Put 66 stickie notes on the back of your door. One for every morning that you made your bed and had your bible time. Were going to get started on the bible time stuff too right now so that you are in that habit quicker. Right now, even if its 10 minutes or a chapter in proverbs have your time with Jesus. Next week we will get into why it matters.
