The wonders of cadence

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

Recently in my pursuit of fitness I started doing my runs to cadence. For those of you who are unaware of what it is it's basically a call and response. Its goal is to not only unite the runners in a rhythm but to pound in the spirit of the run.

The cadence I listen to is called 50 running cadences of the U.S. Marines. So naturally they are all of the spirit of pretty much “this sucks. Love it.” But to be honest some of my favorites are the ones where they review their history, talking about famous Marines and battles.

Ultimately cadence serves two purposes - rhythm and repetition.

And not surprisingly it shows a parallel to the word of God. The Bible is all about repetition for emphasis, think of “Holy, holy, holy.” and “Lord, lord” and “Truly, truly.” In essence repetition is a call for attention, a call to remember.

On the flip side we see that the rhythm portion also sheds light on our walk with God. Cadence doesn't work without constant, even, movement. And neither does our walk with God. Just as one portion of the cadence, one step, doesn't seem like a lot, it is vital to movement. One step followed by another step followed by another. It's the same with our relationship with Jesus, one decision to do the right thing, followed by another, followed by another.

So remember to keep moving and to always strive to repeat what is important.
