A window washer, a maid, and a doubt

Hawk looked at the box on his desk and for the 100th time that day doubted his decision. He had all the trust in Hetz and Jack, they were the only people on this earth he would even consider giving it to. That being said, it did not take away his concern. He was giving them a very very powerful weapon, one that was tempting to misuse. The technology could be used to analyze facial expressions, temperature, body language and eye movement to effectively read  minds. It was highly accurate and a very protected piece of equipment. And he was about to give it to his very own team Foxtrot. Needless to say he was concerned.

Jack and Hetz tumbled into his office already arguing, “I swear, I read your text out loud to the barista. Your drink is just complicated. It's not my fault she got your drink wrong.”

Jack scoffed at him, “It's so straight forward! You must have ordered it wrong.”

“Not everything is my fault!”

“Marris. MacArther. Simmer please.”

They fell silent and slumped into the chairs opposite Hawks, with the desk and the weapon case between them. Jack noticed the case as soon as she stopped arguing and reached to open it up. “No!” Hawk pulled the case back and Hetz gave her hand a playful wack.

“What? I'm denied my coffee AND I'm not allowed to touch things now? Last time I checked we were all equal members of this team.”

“You must have checked a while ago because Hawk has been the boss man for like 6 months.”

“Can you guys stop so we can have an adult conversation for a moment please?” Jack rolled her eyes but stopped talking and Hetz automatically switched his demeanor. “Ok, this case-”

“The one that's off limits?” Jack interrupted.

Hawk sighed, “Yes the one that's off limits. It obviously has something inside of it. And this something has been loaned to me, and i was told specifically if I break it I buy it. This is VERY expensive. Do you understand? We don't have the money to buy it.” He made eye contact with both of them, confirming that they understood. “Ok and then the other part is it's a morally grey weapon.”

“That seems like it could be the more important part.” Hetz countered.

“Arguably but regardless. It reads minds. For lack of a better term.” Jack reached forward again, eagerly.

“Still no.” Hawk pulled it back and Hetz slapped her hand again.

“You guys are going to CAREFULLY use it to do a mission, where you will very gently point said weapon at the president of the unified world during a business meeting so we can understand what's coming next. Do you understand?”

“So you want us to bring a gun.” Jack paused for dramatic effect. “Into a meeting with the president.” she paused again. “And then just talk business?”

“You're bringing the gun outside the meeting. It just needs to be able to see and hear, not necessarily be in the same room. There are some great big windows in the building. Hetz is going to be a window washer on the building across the street and use the weapon from there. Jack is going to plant the listening device, I already bought out one of the waitresses to let you take their place.”

“Ok so we're just ok with sexism now? Hetz gets to wash windows and I have to be a maid?!”

“It has nothing to do with your gender and everything to do with your self control.” Hawk countered.

“Yeah are you really gunna tell me you wouldn't spin it on me and ask if I really read the barista your coffee order?”

Hawk interrupted before she could counter. “I choose the lesser of two evils, Hetz. It speaks nothing of your character, just the lack of Jacks.”

“Woah!” she gasped. “Is it pick on Jack day?”

“No, it's the day where I choose the two people I trust most to do something very important. Unfortunately because I also know you guys, and I'm a bit nervous. But” he let the silence build between them. “I do believe in you.”

“Well isn't that just confidence boosting?” Hetz said to Jack.

She got up and grabbed the case before Hawk could. “Oh yeah. Now this I promise you, Hawk.” she stood at mock attention and changed her voice an octave deeper. “One way or another, we will get this done.” She saluted as her and Hetz left, letting the door slam behind them.

“Well that's… encouraging.” Hawk sighed.
