How many people to a couch?

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

Jack noticed the blank expression on her best friend's face and her curiosity overtook her. “What's wrong Hetz?” she asked. To anyone who didn’t know him, he would have looked normal, but she knew better. At Guardian Angels they were trained to keep their facial expressions under constant control. She knew that if his face was blank, he wanted it that way.

“What?” he asked snapping out of a day dream.

“What's wrong?” she repeated herself

“Nothing.” Jack gave him his own signature eyebrow raise. “Common! I'm fine.”

“Ok.” She said sitting next to him on the small couch, in the process putting an elbow in his rib cage. He cringed more than he should have and Jack looked up at him. “Sorry, I didn’t think that my elbows are that hard. Are you ok?”

“Yeah just… sore.”

“Hetz if you don’t want to tell me that’s fine but don’t lie to me. Rough night at home?” she asked, looking deeply in her best friend's eyes.

“Not much of a home.” he scoffed.

“Yeah.” Silence filled the air for a minute before she said. “But that’s ok because you have got another home.”

“Where?” he asked with some disbelief written on his face. Who would want me? No one does. He thought.

“Here.” She interrupted him.

“Oh yeah a massive underground training facility crawling with agents is real cozy.” he said with a smile.

“Yeah that part may be a bit on the rough side but the rest of it. Those Agents, they are all working together to protect Christians from death. We're all tight here you know that.” He said, patting his leg. “Besides the home isn’t where you’ve got a few walls. Home is where you have got a few friends.” He still looked unconvinced so she called their other teammates. “How many people you think we can fit on this couch?” she asked when the two men joined them.

“At least the four of us!” Matt said, jumping on.

Jack squealed as Hawk joined the pile sitting on top of her. “Move over.” He said.

“I Can’t!” she gasped. There were four of them crammed on the couch now, no, disregard, couch is too strong of a word. Love seat, recliner more like it. None of them were small either. Jack was the shortest at 5 feet even but even she worked out at least daily, if not twice a day. Hawk, the oldest member of the team, laughed at his younger teammate’s antics. But he too groaned when Matt shifted. Hawk, Matt, Jack, and Hetz trained like crazy, spending hours of every day working out and running tactical maneuvers meaning their performance when working was exceptional. But it was moments like these – Trying to fit all of them on a couch, that made their bound so tight.

“Foxtrot!” Another agent from Team Romeo, cut into their laughter. “What the heck are you doing?”

“Hi, Pete! Were- well were seeing how many people we can fit on the couch.” Jack yelled from the bottom of the pile.

“Humm… Well how many you got?”

“Four.” Hetz said from somewhere under Hawk and Matt.

“Heck that’s a small number. Romeo!” he hollered, jumping on top of the pile. “Get over here. I bet we can make at least 8.”

“See,” Jack whispered to Hetz. “I told you.”
